Summer is a difficult season for poetry, in my experience. I write just scanty notes, scribble them here and there, because I hate to see the computer and there’s no time to sit at it for hours. So, in September, I suddenly remember those notes existed and start sorting.
My friend, Kristjaan, hosting the wonderful blog of Carpe Diem Haiku, is never tired. He offers daily, weekly and seasonal prompts. He holds contests, features many translated haiku and great pics. His blog is a great resource of information and support. Although this is not a classical haiku, because it has “my tears” in it, I wrote it after his Little Creatures prompt. Visit his haiku meme blog here. You may decide to join. Who knows what might come.
Here are some haiku written for several of the Carpe Diem daily prompts. It has been exactly a year since the blog was started by my haiku friend, Kristjaan and it has been a year during which my life changed a lot. I graduated, defended my thesis, lost my work, found a new one and… Well, you know what I mean.
This is one of my favourite creatures – dragonfly. The first time I’ve seen one was when it flew in our living room. Apartment block, fifth floor was strange enough. I got scared, I was just around ten. Later on, I told my Dad: ‘It looked just like a helicopter. How did they make themselves like that?’ Imagine the fun of my childish question. My father smiled very cheerfully and said: ‘Maybe people make helicopters like dragonflies, it’s easier.’ I continued: ‘Yeah, sure, but how do they?’ Dad said: ‘Well, maybe the engineers caught one dragonfly and took a good look of it.’ Not a day would pass without some cute memories of Dad come back when I remember all the small and fine things he used to teach me 🙂 (it might seem cheerful, but it’s tearful).
Curiously, or rather not, black used to be my favourite colour when I was a teenager 🙂 Just like any other teenager. Later, when I passed that ‘girlish’ period, I realised black was the lack of colour, so how could it have been my fav ‘colour’? Weird little creature, I was. And sometimes, still am.
