The NaPoWriMo.net gave a wonderful prompt today. We have to “steal” a first line from a poet we like and use it as our first line. I chose T.S.Eliot and the beginning of his Waste Land – one of the most amazing poetic works I’ve ever read.
Here is my poem:
April is the cruelest month, breeding
Expectations to cut off from its past.
April comes unnoticed, after frost retreats
Unloved, detested;
After spring has smiled in
Then pelted us with rain.
When we forget the past
Enters April
On the verge of hatred and desire.
Born out of our cruel minds
Mistaking weather for a heart
April is, of course,
a cruel month.

Ohhhhhh. I love this, especially:
“Mistaking weather for a heart”
Love Eliot. You did him proud.
De, thanks a lot!
I like, I like! I’m in agreement with De, that’s the phrase that really spoke to me, too. Strong write.
brenda – thanks a lot! I’m thrilled it worked, as T.S. Eliot IS great and stealing from him could be a daunting experience 🙂
That’s delightful!
Misky, thanks a lot!
I think every month has its pluses and minuses. April is indeed an in-between month. False fronts, dashed hopes…unpredictable weather. There has in my area even been snow in April. However with several birthdays to celebrate in April it is a month for joy here. Nice write.
Delightful poem, but not so sure about the universal condemnation of April. It is usually kind to us here, with upspringing hope and flowers.
Viv – simply another point of view 🙂 I like April, too.
