The river of innocence, the industry of fire, Magpie tale #116

Magpie Tales #116

Are those tops
I see
the ones of buildings
plants
of industry
that glow in operative fire;
or treetops
burning sunset red?

Is that river
I see
one of tears
or forgiveness,
maybe one of
innocence
flowing towards
the industry-subjected burners?

All innocence slides off
to banks unseen
to heartbeats unexpected.

Fear not
Appearance will hold
Much muddy water in.

  • one of tears
    or forgiveness,
    maybe one of
    innocence
    flowing towards industry…

if only the industry was as forgiving of the water flowing to it…love the gentleness you come to after…how the river/water feeds regardless…

  • Sue

    Great ending.

    =)

  • Nice contrast between innocence and industry…thought provoking last stanza…

  • Great use of the photo prompt – I enjoy prose/poetry that incorporates ideas like the Industrial Age vs nature, effects on society, etc. This was spare and beautiful.

  • Oh, I saw them too, Marian, I tried to ignore them. Like so many try to. Your poem is so revealing and reflective on this sad topic, I appreciate it deeply. Great job!

  • Thanks to:

brian – I appreciate your words.

Sue – you are very kind.

Tess – I have been contemplating on that for some time, in fact.

Li – I love them, too.

Hannah – thanks for the encouraging words.

  • Hi! I too enjoyed the juxtaposition of the nature and industry–I especially liked the play on words “plants of industry”

Thank you for sharing your gift :-)
